Burundi: Nine Dead Following Devastating Landslides in Bujumbura Province
At least nine people have died and six others were injured—several critically—after torrential rains triggered a massive landslide in Burundi's Bujumbura Province on Thursday afternoon. The toll was confirmed Friday by the Burundi National Radio and Television (RTNB).
The disaster occurred in the Kirama zone, where a combination of torrential downpours, gale-force winds, and hail led to the sudden collapse of terrain. Local officials report that four residential properties were completely obliterated.
Casualties and Search Efforts
According to Fulgence Nzosaba, the Kirama zone chief, the death toll rose steadily as search operations progressed:
Immediate Fatalities: Seven victims were killed instantly when the landslide struck.
Hospitalizations: One victim succumbed to their injuries at Muramvya Hospital.
Recovery Operations: Emergency teams recovered a ninth body from the debris on Friday morning.
Structural Risks and Displacement
Authorities have issued an urgent warning for surrounding areas. Geological instability has caused visible fissures in the walls of neighboring homes and public infrastructure. Mr. Nzosaba emphasized that these buildings are now structurally compromised, necessitating the immediate evacuation and relocation of residents to prevent further casualties.
Humanitarian Crisis
The survivors of the Kirama landslide are facing an acute humanitarian crisis. Having lost their livelihoods and crops, the displaced population is currently without shelter. Local leaders have issued a formal appeal to the international community and aid organizations for:
Emergency Housing: Immediate shelter for those left homeless.
Subsistence Aid: Provision of food and essential household items.
Medical & Funeral Support: Assistance with rising hospital costs and dignified burials for the deceased.
